LAMB GARAGE, WALLINGFORD

A mid-scale residential development and renovation project towards the centre of Wallingford, Oxfordshire providing 5 terraced houses, 3 spacious townhouses, and a block of 4 duplex apartments, along with the renovation of the listed coach house into a stunning 2 bed house. This prominent and difficult site on Castle Street at the Northern approach to Wallingford town centre had lain derelict for many years. Previously occupied by Victorian garage buildings, the site had historically provided coaching services to the adjacent inn (now the Lamb Arcade).

The site sits within the Wallingford conservation area, immediately opposite the castle ruins (which is a scheduled ancient monument), and there are a number of listed buildings in the immediate vicinity. An existing planning consent existed for the site, and Carroll Architects and Surveyors were asked to market the site and negotiate its sale to a developer. Although highly constrained by the previous planning history, we worked with the developer and the planners to design a revised scheme, which provided a high quality of accommodation and more appropriate design, better reflecting the history of the site and responding to its ‘gateway’ location.

The building was completed in 2009, and proved highly successful both for our clients, and for purchasers.
