NUTHATCH COTTAGE, CHECKENDON
Two storey extension and renovations to a listed, timber framed property in Checkendon. Planning was complicated by the twin constraints of mature trees immediately adjacent to the property, and the need to keep the extensions subservient to the existing house, despite the restricted first floor height. The final design therefore required a lowered ground floor and sunken patio, and the resulting staircase became a key design feature.
Highly sustainable oak frame and Hemcrete construction was used to allow high performance with a traditional aesthetic and appropriate vapour permeability and flexibility to match the original construction.
